Targeted English Language Development Professional Development Matters: The Impact of English Language Development-Content Based Teaching and Learning (ELD-CBTL) on Teachers’ Self-Efficacy in Teaching Secondary Level English Learners

This study is situated in an educational context where secondary Latinx English learners’ enrollment has dramatically increased. However, many face limited access to quality education and lack the skills be college career-ready. To tackle this problem, Language Development–Content-Based Teaching Learning (ELD–CBTL) model designed implemented help shift teachers’ knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, practices of using appropriate ELD strategies a career academy ELs. The ELD–CBTL rooted teacher change theory aligned with California Principles Learner Roadmap, which included professional development on ELD, instructional training, coaching support. Findings show that participating self-efficacy shifted when they applied skills, made them more confident providing rigorous EL content meets requirements for admission.
